In the winter of 2024, the Prospect Heights Police Department implemented the use of body-worn cameras (BWCs) to record audio and video during routine police interactions. Research indicates that BWCs, when mounted on an officer's uniform, enhance transparency and accountability for all parties involved. This technology effectively clarifies instances of citizen complaints, fosters increased professionalism among officers, and supports criminal prosecutions.

Our Policy

The Prospect Heights Police Department provides sworn police officers (hereafter referred to as "officers") with body-worn cameras (BWCs) as part of its commitment to the principle that video and audio documentation of officers' interactions with community members constitutes an essential and valuable resource. The implementation of BWCs enhances professionalism, accountability, and transparency by accurately documenting encounters with the public. This policy aims to uphold positive relationships with the community and will not capture footage or conversations involving citizens who choose not to be recorded. The Prospect Heights Police Department shall endeavor to respect the reasonable expectations of privacy of all individuals, as stipulated by law. All usage of BWCs within the department will adhere to the Illinois Law Enforcement Officer-Worn Body Camera Act (50 ILCS 706/10 et seq.).

The Prospect Heights Police Department recognizes that BWCs may not fully capture all aspects of what an officer perceives, hears, senses, or experiences. The recorded footage does not provide a complete representation of the circumstances influencing an officer’s reaction to a specific situation. Officers shall continue to furnish comprehensive information through police reports to ensure thorough documentation of incidents.
